OVI Screening Tests

During a driver's intervention program class, various screening tests may be administered.  This is a guideline as to what the values mean.  Further information is available by searching for the appropriate screen name.

MAST - Michigan Alcohol Screening Test

Tends to be sensitive at the five point level and finds more people alcoholic than would be anticipated.

0 to 3 --- No apparent problem
4 --- Early or middle problem drinker
5 --- or more Problem drinker (Alcoholic)

CAGE - Based on the below questions

  1. Have you ever felt you should Cut down on your drinking?

  2. Have you ever been Annoyed when people have commented on your drinking?

  3. Have you ever felt Guilty or badly about your drinking?

  4. Have you ever had an Eye opener first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover?

Score one point for each yes answer.

If you scored 1, there is an 80% chance you're addicted to alcohol.
If you scored 2, there is an 89% chance you're addicted to alcohol.
If you scored 3, there is a 99% chance you're addicted to alcohol.
If you scored 4, there is a 100% chance you're addicted to alcohol.

Most accurate for white, middle-aged men and not very accurate for identifying alcohol abuse in older people, white women, and African and Mexican Americans.

DAST 10 or 20 - Drug abuse screening test

No indication -  0 for 10; 0 for 20

Low indication - 1-2 for 10; 1-5 for 20 - suggests brief counselling

Intermediate - 3-5 for 10; 6-10 for 20 - suggests intensive outpatient services are needed

 Substantial -- 6-8 for 10; 11-15 for 20 - suggests intensive intervention

Severe -- 9-10 for 10; 16-20 for 20 - suggests intensive intervention


24 hours a day -- 7 days a week
